I have just finished a 4 week stint as a ‘film-maker’ in residence at the North West Film Archive as part of AND Festival. I have to develop a 20 minute film for screening with a live soundtrack for September. I spent my time there trying to take in as much of the archive as possible – the films, the people, the operations, the technology. From this I have been developing an idea around ideas of preservation, selection, materials, and collection. You can see my thunks at a special blog I have set up – www.videosmithery.co.uk

Dear Moira
apologies for the delay in replying
I agree, concrete is a maybe a ‘typical’ artist subject. The phrase ‘concrete film’ as much as anything is what I liked – trying to find parallels with ‘concrete poetry’ – investigating and expressing through form as well as content. I was also inspired by the fly over on Liverpool and the way concrete constructions often represent that 1950s utopian vision of the future. Sufjan Stevens did a fantastic musical piece about the Bronx Queens Expressway which celebrates a seemingly mundane piece of urban architecture.
I have to say, having thought about it, I do much prefer ‘Jelly Film’ as an concept. Indeed since starting, my journey has been away from a fixed ‘concrete’ idea and form to a more exploratory approach, and the belief that, whatever happens, my film will inevitably take some kind of form, much like Jelly.

Dear Sam
Concrete is such a topical typical word for an artist to make a film about. Why don’t you make a film about jelly?
It rolls.
Best wishes
