Flatpack Pics – Knitted Horse in Motion

April 7, 2015 | By | No Comments

Some pics from last week’s knitting performance at Flatpack Festival. The premise – I knit Muybridge’s horse in motion from scratch, and animate it infront of an audience whilst listening to a soundtrack of 7 inch ‘horse’ singles. This is only the third time I’ve performed the piece, and im pleased to say it worked this time (thats 2:1 so far). Final animation below. Many thanks to Reuben from Sculpture (who were absolutely amazing performers in their later set) for handling the horse tunes.

web_crackle_02-08

I’m currently video designer on two shows at the Royal Opera House in London, both loosely based on Faust. One of those shows is ‘The Crackle‘, by Matthew Herbert, an artist renowned for his work with live and recorded sound, and exploratory technology in a performance setting. It’s a very brave piece, expanding the context of opera to include live foley artists, reactive video projection, spatial sound mixing, unrestrained audience participation via a sonic barcoding app (Chrip), and a huge mechanical instrument called ‘The Dervish’ by MIT genius Andy Cavatorta.  Oh, and 47 children. It’s no small feat. It’s all contained within an amazing forced perspective set by designer Becs Andrews.

The show twists the Faustian story to present a cautionary tale about the possibilities and traps of working with digital media. I’ve been basing my designs around an 8-bit inspired aesthetic – running bespoke animation modules and prepared video through simple effects to give the images a very glitchy playful bitmap feel to them. It’s actually not a million miles away from my knitting work. As always I’m using Isadora, allowing me to utilise live cameras to generate imagery from movement onstage, and also to create some interesting  and dynamic compositing and displacement effects. I’ve also managed to sneak a few punchcard designs in there.

below are some images from the rehearsal process.

I’ll be showing work in development from both the Knitting Digital and Punchcard Economy projects at the Korean Brand and Entertainment Expo in London. I’ll have my knitting machines there and showcasing some knitted animations and date visualisations. Other UK artists exhibiting include Dave Lynch, David Ogle, Gina Czarnecki, and Daniel Rourke and Kyoung Kim of  GLTICH KARAOKE. Oh yeah, and PSY is upstairs at the main event as a hologram.

Framing Motion

March 18, 2010 | By |

I’ve been waiting patiently for the press launch before I could put this one up. Here is the trailer I made for Moves 2010 International Festival of Movement On Screen. The theme of the festival is ‘Framing Motion’. The logo is by Smiling Wolf. And the festival takes place from 21st – 25th April in Liverpool and across the UK.

I was asked to create a piece of “artwork”, and whilst ultimately this is a just simple sting for a festival, the openness of that brief allowed me to explore my practice of using live layered feedback to create much more organic forms and movements. It may not look so slick, but its an achievement for me personally as I’m not a motion graphics designer. Instead of using After Effects or Motion (which scare me I’m ashamed to admit) I used the tools I do know: live camera feedback and Isadora.

The theme of Framing Motion was an interesting one for me to play with, as it is about the context in which movement occurs. With this video i tried to merge the movement and its context through the use of a feedback loop, in which the ‘frame’ of the image is a central visual element rather than a peripheral one.

This is not a straight forward feedback loop either – I was able to isolate changes in the image (‘difference’) and re-inject these back into the animation, but with changing tints. So what we see are essentially the movements between frames, rather than the direct content of the frames. The things we see are the things we can’t see. Apologies I’m babbling.

The sound, a track called ‘Palindromes’, was by my good friend and sonic structuralist Amos. As the name implies, the track is structured so it sounds the same forwards as backwards. This encouraged me to make both an intro and an outro video sting, but I’ve only put the intro one up here.

Anyway, cheers to Gala at Moves for giving me a stab at this. Thankyou to Tom for the excellent music. Will hopefully be creating some live VJ mixes during the festival alongside Tristan “TV Lux” Brady-Jacobs. Be sure to come and enjoy!
