Exhibition: Punchcard Economy at HKW

March 1, 2015 | By | No Comments

The Punchcard Economy project and banner is part of the Time and Motion: Redefining Working Life exhibition at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. The show was launched as the guest exhibition as part of Transmediale 2015, where I also was able to do a machine knitting workshop exploring some the methods and concepts behind the banner. The show also features work by Tuur Van Balen & Revital Cohen, Ellie Harrison, Tehching Hsieh and Oliver Walker.

The exhibition runs from 29 Jan – 6 April 2015

Data As Culture + Workshop at Lighthouse Brighton

June 18, 2014 | By | No Comments

The Punchcard Economy project will be touring with the Data As Culture exhibition to Lighthouse in Brighton.

http://www.lighthouse.org.uk/programme/data-as-culture

The show opens on 21st June and runs till 2oth July.

As with the ODI show, the venue is again too small to showacse the full banner, however, an ‘8 Hours Labour‘ sample banner containing the same dataset has been knitted especially for the Brighton venue.

I will be running  a machine knitting workshop as part of the show, on Saturday 28th June – if you’re based in Brighton and would like to knit your working week and a punchcard pattern repeat, then visit the Lighthouse site to sign up.

A couple of weeks ago I was at the National Football Museum working with families there to design and knit a very long customised football scarf. The scarf featured 24 stitch pixel designs alongside webcam snaps of the designers themselves.

I’ve put a few posts up on the Knitting Digital site that give an overview of the workshop, the designs created, and the final piece:

February 2, 2014 | By | No Comments

web_xmasScarf-20

Bringing the knitting to the National Football Museum on 17th February – come along and add your designs to the über scarf. blurb below.

===========

This February Half Term, the National Football Museum are running a series of fantastic, hands-on art activities for young visitors, as part of our ‘Out Of Play’ programme or art, technology and learning.

This Monday, join artist Sam Meech and knitting blackbelt Iris Cooper with their remarkable digital knitting project.

Experiment with pixel art, get hands on with machine knitting, and help us to create a super-long knitted football scarf for the museum.

From a process of drawing to pixel design, before getting hands on with a hacked electronic knitting machine . You’ll be able to take home your pixel artwork design as well as seeing it translated into knitting as part of the final scarf!

KNITRONICA at the Whitworth Pubcrawl – 23rd Feb

February 2, 2014 | By | No Comments

An interesting event coming up – a live experiment in a Manchester music venue working with knitting and sound. In truth I’ve not ironed out the finer details of how exactly this will work, but I have faith we should be able to generate some interesting forms, both sonic and textile. I’m delighted as well to be joined by designer Marie Young who is looking at parallels between knitting and the Tenori-on. The event is part of the Whitworth Art Gallery Pub Crawl – a series of arts events in unusual spaces across manchester. The programme launches tonight.

=======================

Sunday 23rd Feb at Big Hands Manchester , 1pm – 7pm

KNITRONICA

A textiles experiment working with live music, sampled sound and knitting machines. A unique ‘band’ comprised of Tenori-on, a macbook, a hacked Brother 950i knitting machine, and possibly a couple of other music making devices, producing cross-over sounds and stitches. Exploring the parallels between punchcards and musical structures, electronic sequencing and the knitted digital image.

A collaboration by:

Sam Meech
Marie Young
Iris Cooper

Time & Motion – FACT, Liverpool

December 12, 2013 | By | One Comment

timeAndMotion_sider

The Punchcard Economy knitted banner project is in the following exhibition:

Thursday 12 December – Sunday 9 March – FACT, LIVERPOOL

more info on the FACT website

Time & Motion will be the first showing of the completed knitted 888 banner.

A Time & Motion Study is a scientific method – developed by Frederick Taylor and later by Frank and Lillian Gilbreth – used to analyse work procedures and determine the most efficient method of operation. This approach has been used extensively in workplaces including factories, hospitals, retail, and banks since the industrial age.

Using this as a starting point, the exhibition Time & Motion will use artworks, research projects, archival materials and interventions to track our journey through the world of work, from clocking on at the factory gates to checking in online from our home office or local entrepreneurial networking space. As our industrial economy has given way to a service and knowledge economy, producing ideas and experiences rather than artefacts, how have our patterns of day-to-day working life changed?

Film Material Soup #8 – 30th Nov, 7pm

November 24, 2013 | By | One Comment

Next Saturday I will be doing a ‘knitting performance’ at the FILM MATERIAL SOUP event at Rogue Studios – a chance once again to share my work with knitting machines.

The event showcases work by artists using sound, moving image and lasers. It’s fair to say i’m in some good company (see the list on the flyer below). I’ll be creating the Knitted Horse in Motion from scratch, using the punchcard loop, praying the no yarn snags or dropped stitches befall me. The iconic horse will also be making an appearance as part of David Lynch‘s work with lasers and mobile projection.
